Wimbledon 2009

Some of the excited youngsters going to the 2009 championships
Wimbledon was fantastic!
That was the cry from the Tennis Inverclyde youngsters and leaders who visited the Championships at Wimbledon over the final two days. A party of 19 youngsters flew down to Wimbledon and despite some train travel cancellations, they had a great time in warm sunshine.
As well as watching the girls and boys finals (not a Brit amongst the contestants) on Court No. 1, the youngsters had the thrill of extra good Centre Court tickets for the men’s and ladies’ doubles events seeing Venus and Serena Williams thumping great winners not 20 feet away from them. They were also able to watch the singles finals from the giant screen on Henman Hill and also from the new screens located in the greatly enlarged No. 2 court which now holds around 3000 spectators. Then there was the Kids Game Zone to explore and test out their skills plus the Wimbledon shops to visit and also the hunt for celebrities which included Adrian Childs from BBC television and Chico the entertainer from The X Factor.
‘All of us had such a great time’, said Tennis Inverclyde Chairman Chris Jewell. ‘The finals, particularly the men’s final, seem to get better and better and the youngsters were thrilled at being right at the heart of tennis sitting on the coveted Centre Court and watching the best players in the world doing what they do best. We are grateful to all our sponsors, in particular Sport Inverclyde and W H Kirkwood, whose financial help make it possible for another group of children to visit Wimbledon and see their heroes in action.’
